Brake Calipers - uofa formula racing

You may be asking yourself; why not just purchase off-the-shelf brake calipers, there are tons of great options out there... Here's the backstory.

The UA-22 wheel assemblies were designed around Brembo radial-mount calipers used exclusively by motogp 3 teams. They are fantastic monoblock calipers with dual opposing titanium pistons and a total weight of 340 g per caliper. The team purchased a set of these calipers in late November anticipating potential long lead times due to COVID supply chain issues. Unfortunately, due to the exclusivity of the Brembo caliper selected and negligence from the vendor, it was discovered that Brembo had no calipers in stock and would not be doing a production run until late July - well after the team's two competitions. This left the team in a tough situation with no front brakes for the UA-22 vehicle and no option to retrofit other brake caliper styles due to upright and wheel geometry that were already set in stone.

In an attempt to rectify this issue in a timely manner, I designed and machined custom front brake calipers utilizing off-the-shelf Brembo components including pistons, seals, bleeder screws, and brake pad springs and pins. The final design is a 2 piece caliper construction machined from 7075 aluminum with dual opposing pistons that weigh 376 g with all required hardware.
